Château Mouton-Rothschild is the glitziest of the First Growths and the only wine to have ever been upgraded in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. According to Wine Advocate: “Mouton is unashamedly gregarious flamboyant and melodramatic… a splash of colour in what can be a monochromatic region.”

After a muted reception at En Primeur the critics have been surprised and incredibly impressed with the quality of the 2014 Bordeaux vintage from bottle as demonstrated by how many wines have had their scores subsequently raised. For example the respected American wine critic James Suckling scored Mouton-Rothschild 2014 at 96-97 points at En Primeur but raised his score to near perfection when he tasted it from bottle two years later…

99 points “Incredible iodine oyster currants peat and cedar. Yet subtle. Full body chewy yet polished tannins and great depth and complexity on the finish. I love the spice and blueberry character on the finish. Vibrant. A sexy style of Mouton. Try drinking this in 2022.” – James Suckling

Similarly Jancis Robinson MW admitted during En Primeur that she “may be underrating this” when she scored it at 17.5 points. And she was proven right when she tasted it blind in 2018 and upgraded her score to 18.5 points describing it as “Rich and sweet and very forward and beguiling.”

This is clearly a wine that will provide decades of pleasure if cellared carefully and it’s also one that should not be underestimated!

Mouton Rothschild’s labels change each year. 2014’s is by David Hockney who was a personal friend of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild. Sadly the great artist died in 2014 so this bright label pays homage to him. See how dazzling the full wine glass is.
