98 points, “Deep garnet coloured, the 2009 Palmer delivers a beguiling array of black fruit—warm plums, cassis and black cherry compote – with kirsch and wild sage sparks plus profound suggestions of fragrant earth, black truffles, iron ore and liquid liquorice. Full-bodied, rich and decadently seductive in the mouth, the generous fruit is superbly framed with plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
98 points, “This has such class and power. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries, with hints of violets. Full-bodied, with polished tannins and a juicy finish. Solid and extremely pretty. Fabulous finish.” – James Suckling
97 points, “A wine that is every bit as good as the brilliant 2005. This is a wonderfully balanced Palmer, despite some of the highest ever levels of tannin in the young wine, according to Thomas Duroux. Aromatic, plum and blackcurrant fruit, with silky yet plentiful Cabernet tannins, well-balanced oak and a silky finish. Deceptively forward, this is a wine for the long haul.” – Tim Atkin MW
A wine that regularly vies with the First Growths and on occasion surpasses them. In 2016 a barrel from the Margaux producer sold for HK$3m (approximately £270,000) at a Sotherby’s auction in Hong Kong, which was six times its original estimate. Château Palmer is a wine in high demand.
2009 was a spectacular vintage, and this is jam-packed with damson, cassis, cherry, tobacco, incense, thyme, cut spring flowers and a melange of freshly ground coffee and spices. A wonderful partner to lamb – either roasted or melting off the bone in a tagine – and lighter game, not to mention mushroom dishes and truffles. If you have any left, it will carry through to the cheeseboard wonderfully too.
