95 points “I love the earth walnut bark and smoke aromas that pour out of this.” – James Suckling
95 points “Displays such personality gourmandise and freshness.” – Decanter Magazine
94 points “Incredibly impressive… Beautifully layered and textured concentrated with fine tannins and the purity and elegance that make the vintage so compelling front and centre it’s a high-class Saint Estèphe to enjoy over the coming 20-25 years or more.” – Jeb Dunnuck
Phélan Ségur is so named because it was bought by the Phélan family from Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur. Its previous owner de Ségur had an eye for the finer things having previously owned vineyards that would go on to become Mouton Rothschild Lafite Rothschild and Latour. In 2017 it was sold to a Belgian investor for a price that broke all records for Cru Bourgeois châteaux probably in no small part because of the quality of this very vintage. As you can see this is quite literally hot property.
In 2016 this classic Saint-Estèphe is medium-bodied displaying kirsch cassis cigar dark chocolate violets old-fashioned pencils and woody spices. A quite charming Claret and a château on the rise. As Jancis Robinson says this
