Wine Advocate has called the 1998 Trotanoy “a 40- to 50-year wine. One for the true Pomerol-lovers.” Longevity like that make this a worthy gift; one to lay down and enjoy on a tenth twentieth or thirtieth anniversary. Who knows if you’re going to a wedding this year it may even be one for the ruby anniversary.
One of Pomerol’s true greats; bursting with vitality and richness. Trotanoy’s name comes from its clay-rich and concrete-like soils that are “too wearisome” to cultivate. But the Moueix family ploughed on and that solid and humid soil really concentrates the fruit. Part of the vineyard also lies on the ‘buttonhole’ a unique region of soil dominated by Pétrus and shared with other illustrious company – La Conseillante l‘Évangile Lafleur and Clinet to name but a few. All of this makes Trotanoy a prized Bordeaux for those lucky enough to get their hands on it.
Rich blackberry black cherry and blackcurrant give way to red fruit clove toffee truffle and a gentle waft of cigar smoke. Silky moreish and decadent but young; is there such a thing as a patient hedonist?
