Although known for their modern Ports Churchill’s Estates is now creating “perfect food wines” according to Wine Advocate. Much of which comes from Quinta da Gricha which sits on the cooler southern bank of the Douro. Here the 50-year-old vines produce fresher wines than those in the standard Churchill’s range. There are two reds that take the “Gricha” name but they are not to be confused because although from the same terroir they are very different in style. The Quinta da Gricha Douro Red is the flagship and is big rich and beefy. But the Gricha Douro Red this wine is a fresher and more elegant style. Having said that 2017 was a fabulous year in the Douro Valley so this naturally has a little more oomph than some previous vintages.

Gricha is a field blend i.e. various varieties interplanted picked and vinified together from old vines that has been matured in new French oak for a year. The result is packed with vibrant freshly picked fruit blueberries and spices. This is a red that is going to love tomato-based dishes and slow-cooked stews.

Johnny Graham of the W & J Graham’s Port family founded Churchill’s in the 1980s which then became the first new Port Shippers in Oporto for around 100 years. Johnny – who named the company after his wife Caroline Churchill – is acknowledged as one of the best blenders and tasters of Port in the business. As a result his boutique firm produces some of the highest quality and most individual expressions made today. These are fortified wines that in the company’s own words really do force you to “rethink Port”. No longer is this simply the drink of grandparents but a new movement that’s fun approachable and fiercely modern. They’ve also now branched out into producing some fabulous unfortified wines such as this.
