Late Bottled Vintage is always one of the most popular styles of Port and when it comes from such an excellent producer like Churchill’s even more so.
Matured for four years in oak to soften the tannins this is bottled unfiltered and will therefore require decanting and a couple of hours to breathe before serving. But when you do you’ll discover a complex LBV packed with chocolate-covered red fruit. It has a wonderful balance of warming black pepper and roasted herbs cooled by refreshing mint and a touch of pine sap. Now all you need is a cheeseboard or a chocolate dessert to serve it alongside.
Johnny Graham of the W & J Graham’s Port family founded Churchill’s in the 1980s which then became the first new Port Shippers in Oporto for around 100 years. Johnny – who named the company after his wife Caroline Churchill – is acknowledged as one of the best blenders and tasters of Port in the business. As a result his boutique firm produces some of the highest quality and most individual expressions made today. These are fortified wines that in the company’s own words really do force you to “rethink Port”. No longer is this simply the drink of grandparents but a new movement that’s fun approachable and fiercely modern.
