This rich dense and highly polished single-vineyard Sangiovese is throbbing with pure black cherry tangy raspberry leathery meat dried herbs salty liquorice spices and tobacco. Matured for 36 months in Slavonian oak it’s makes you feel as distinguished sophisticated and focussed as slipping into bespoke tailoring. Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona have earned a permanent place in Brunello di Montalcino’s pantheon of greats. Critically acclaimed organically farmed and state of the art they are one of Italy’s most sought-after wine producers and their history is a truly incredible one. Although the property can trace its heritage back to the 17th Century it’s the more recent bit that interests us. The estate came to be owned by the Ciacci family and Elda Ciacci married a count called Alberto Piccolomini d’Aragona a descendant of one of the Popes. When she died in 1985 she left behind no heirs. To everybody’s surprise she gifted the entire 220-hectare property to Giuseppe Bianchini – the farmer who had dedicated his life to managing its vines olive groves historic cellar and rolling Tuscan hills. It remains in his family – currently presided over by Paolo and Lucia – to this very day.
