Introducing the wildcat’s golden gaze…

Every year since 2001, Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…

Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender, Dr Craig Wilson, the 2022 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold Chapter 2’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. The bottles were designed by two illustrators, Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor, and might well be the most colourful and vivid yet. Each bottle carries a QR code, providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries, plus innovative cocktail ideas. Fans of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Scotch of course will find much to love here.

Clynelish 12 Year Old Special Release 2022 undergoes a secondary maturation in casks seasoned with Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry. It was inspired by the legend of a wildcat that emerged from an epic blizzard and turned its golden gaze on the cask holding this Scotch. It’s said that the fiery glare imparted glowing spices to this winter warmer. The classic Clynelish is bottled at 14 years old and 46%, so this is a far more fiery and youthful expression. Mince pies, poached pears, burning candles, hot pepper, medicinal herbs, creamy porridge drizzled with honey, rich Sherry sweetness and spicy feat. Having sampled this dram, we’re literally purring. Those whisky cats are going to go wild for it, so don’t miss out. We recommend enjoying it next to the fire with the cat curled up on your lap, maybe with a drop or two of water to douse that blazing 58.5% ABV.

The large distillery in the Northern Highlands that we know today as Clynelish was built in the late 1960s. But the now-silent original Clynelish distillery – which came to be known as Brora – was established back in 1819. This is therefore a whisky maker with a long and dramatic history. Now part of Diageo’s ‘Classic Malts’ line-up, this is a whisky that really lives up to that moniker.

The weighty, slightly peaty and deeply coastal whiskies produced at Clynelish are much valued by blenders and connoisseurs for their incredible complexity. If you’re finding Speyside isn’t challenging you enough, but aren’t quite ready for Islay yet, or you just want a whisky that will whisk your senses away to the seaside for a little R&R, then look no further than Clynelish.
