Artfully conceived in their airy tasting room in Chiswick Compass Box has taken their Highland Malt Blend of Clynelish Dailuaine and Teaninich then layered on top of it older components with more first-fill Sherry butt influence. These elements are decadently sherried Glen Ord soft stone fruit-nuanced Benrinnes and a creamy herby dash of Allt-a-Bhainne. Only 12 240 bottles were produced and living up to its name it’s an extravaganza of peanut brittle toffee apple ginger nuts mulled white wine stewed rhubarb black cherry yoghurt dried figs chocolate orange Fino Sherry biltong warm leather and toasted coconut. This is not a whisky – it’s a piece of art painted with the broad brushstrokes of freedom but also with the intricate detail and deft hand of a great master.
Ten years before Extravaganza was released The Spice Tree was briefly banned as its cooperage and cask maturation were deemed too “untraditional”. We now live in freer times so raise a glass of this wonderful whisky to that!
