In 2022 Dalmore unveiled the Vintage Collection – two whiskies bottled in 2022 that showcase the Highland distillery’s whisky-making artistry.

Once a year in a tradition going back more than 60 years Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass and Master Distiller Richard Paterson OBE visit the distillery’s historic sandstone warehouse and explore the barrels ageing there in the shadows. A handful of casks that display a particularly distinguished character are selected and bottled as a Dalmore Vintage – a rare expression that will never be repeated.

As the name suggests the Dalmore Vintage 2003 was distilled in 2003 and began its journey in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. It was then transferred to Rivesaltes casks (a sweet wine from the Pyrenées-Orientales department on the French border with Spain that’s scarcely seen in whisky making) rare Matusalem and Amoroso Sherry casks (many of which come from the famous and respected Sherry bodega of González Byass) and a small batch of Bourbon barrels. These were masterfully married to create a harmonious Scotch brimming with Manuka honey traditional toffee leathery vanilla pods maple syrup baklava vintage marmalade polished antique furniture and sweetly spiced dark fruits. We love how the 46.9% ABV lifts that warming spice in the finish making it feel like the ultimate dram for winter nights. While you sip it why not think back to what you were doing in 2003?

As regal resplendent and undeniably Scottish as the silver stag emblazoned across their bottles is Dalmore is nothing short of legendary. Early owners of this distillery in Alness just north of Inverness came from Clan Mackenzie. Each bottle of Dalmore bears a twelve-point stag in honour of the Mackenzie’s Chief Colin of Kintail who famously saved King Alexander III of Scotland from a charging buck and was rewarded the right to use this royal emblem. Fortune favours the brave apparently and if you’re looking for Dutch courage this is a delicious way to obtain it. Especially considering the whiskies are made by the talented Gregg Glass under the watchful eye of the iconic Master Distiller Richard Paterson a man so skilled he once insured his nostrils for £1.6 million with Lloyd’s of London. The wonderfully mahogany Scotch these two and their team produce at Dalmore is rich and full-bodied making it the ultimate postprandial dram and a perfect partner to a cigar.
