95 points, “This 2020 is almost cosy with concentrated extract at the core. This generous body is smartly lifted by vivid acidity. The flavours range from citrus and star fruit to roasted hazelnuts and a hint of smoke.” – Tim Atkin MW

93-95 points, “The 2020 Chablis Les Clos Gran Cru is clean and fresh on the nose, a little more austere than the 2019 yet beautifully defined and perhaps more mineralité. The taut, fresh palate has wonderful salinity and a vibrant finish that belies the warm summer.” – Neal Martin, Vinous

This outstanding Grand Cru reminds one of zesting lemons on to a brand-new oak chopping board through a grater that’s previously been used for nutmeg. A hugely complex Chablis that slowly unfurls with each new sip revealing nuances of chalk, snuffed beeswax candles, sea salt, roasted nuts and toasted seeds. For serving suggestions, think goats’ cheese, salads topped with toasted seeds and citrusy dressing, lemon sole and long, luxurious afternoons in the summer sun.

Les Clos is widely regarded as one of the finest of the Grands Crus in Chablis, its south-facing slopes capturing the maximum sun exposure, creating powerful and long-lived wines. The majority of this Chardonnay is aged in stainless steel, with around 35% aged in oak. Of that only about 10% is in new barrels. With a few more years in the bottle, those oaky notes will meld wonderfully into the texture of the wine, so don’t rush it.

J. Moreau & Fils was set up in 1814. But the family business was sold on and then again once more. No Moreau has worked for the company since. So, when Christian Moreau regained the opportunity to promote the family’s wines again, this signalled the coming home of one of Chablis’ great names. Domaine Christian Moreau is now presided over by Christian’s son Fabien. This consistently excellent yet tiny operation boasts over 50% of its 11.5 hectares in Grand Cru sites and that’s why Wine Advocate singles this producer out as “one of the most reliable sources of Chablis in recent years.”
