For a long time now the Loire’s Reuilly has been considered a ‘poor man’s Sancerre’ or confused with Rully in Burgundy. However this region is undergoing a huge renaissance and one of the under-the-radar producers at the vanguard is the pioneering Denis Jamain. Reuilly has the same Kimmeridgian soils as Sancerre Pouilly-Fumé Menetou and Chablis and through his biodynamic and organic farming Denis Jamain is able to harness all that wonderful minerality to dramatic effect.

‘Les Pierres Plates’ means ‘the flat white stones’ and the Reuilly Rouge produced on this vineyard is one is a wonderful and great value alternative to Burgundy. It’s a medium-bodied unoaked and crunchy Pinot Noir and the tasting experience makes us think of eating a punnet of freshly picked summer fruit in the sunshine on a farm. We recommend stocking up on this wine before the Pinot Noir geeks catch on and serving it with duck breast and a berry sauce Christmas leftovers with cranberry sauce tomato salads or Hortobágyi palacsinta – a classic Hungarian pancake.

The vineyards of Reuilly were decimated by phylloxera but Denis Jamain’s grandfather never lost hope. He replanted the family vineyards and like the roots of his vines his passion has pushed its way down deep through the generations since.
