97 points “The purple colour is even more concentrated here. Heady densely wound fruit a greater suppleness than the Échézeaux more flesh on the bones sumptuous dense black fruit notes brought back to base camp by the freshness of the finish. The lightest dusting of cocoa powder which was less evident on the Échézeaux. The pinpoint pricks of fresh mineral acidity do this wine a world of good. Perfect harmony!”
96 points “Showing more tannin and backbone than DRC's Échézeaux bottling which tends to be the case this comes from vines aged between 70 and 90 years old and benefitted from it cooler more moisture-retentive soils in 2018. Intensely spicy with clove and tobacco pouch aromas impressive texture and weight refreshing supporting acidity and lots of underlying concentration.” – Decanter
95 points “Here too there is a touch of oak toast surrounding the notably ripe but markedly restrained aromas of black cherry liqueur violet lavender exotic tea and sandalwood. The rich full-bodied and muscular flavours also brim with sappy dry extract that possess a seductive mouthfeel before culminating in a hugely long finish. Like the Échézeaux this is a big bold and robust effort that should develop gradually over the next 25 to 30 years. This contrast of power and refinement is potentially one of the greatest Grands Échézeaux the Domaine has produced in the 21st Century though the 2019 will be a worthy rival.” – Allen Meadows Burghound
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate said of the wine from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti “Over the last few years the Grands Échézeaux seems like the most improved wine at DRC.” So collectors have been snapping it up. Hailing from vines that are over 55 years old this wine has immense power intricate complexity and just seems to hover there on the palate kind of like one of those beautiful alien spaceships in a Hollywood blockbuster.
Sometimes simply called DRC or “the Domaine” Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the most famous name in Burgundy if not the entire world of fine wine. The Grand Cru site from which it takes its name tops Wine-Searcher’s list of The World’s Top 50 Most Expensive Wines. Any one of their wines would be the crowning glory of any collection offering an experience that many only dream of. Based in Vosne-Romanée their holdings include the mythical La Tâche and Romanée-Conti over half of Romanée-Saint-Vivant one third of Grands Échézeaux and half of Richebourg not to mention vineyards in Corton Le Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet. Mind-numbingly low yields from their old vines exacerbate the scarcity making availability a perpetually fleeting thing.
Wine Critic Neal Martin says Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s “wines are so rare sought after and let us be frank so prohibitively expensive; that mere utterance is as close as most people get… Their raison d'etre is to offer pleasure these are bottles surfeit with enjoyment surfeit with profundity.” He notes that the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced here offer “finesse balance poise refinement” and a capacity to “age like no other wine I can think of. Quite simply they have an unerring ability to maintain the freshness and poise over decades.” He concludes that those lucky enough to get their hands on a bottle “may be in for an unforgettable experience.”
