Ultima Reserva was crafted using the last crop to be planted by Don Julio and his family back in 2006. When those agaves were mature, the piñas were distilled, barrelled and set aside to create this Extra Añejo Tequila. It was filled into a Solera-like ageing system, much like those used for making the finest Sherry, along with other characterful Tequilas to eke out Don Julio’s precious legacy. This unique Mexican spirit was finished for two to four months in Madeira casks, which is the very first time Don Julio has used sweet wine casks. With all that provenance, the spirit in this elegant and slender bottle is an honour just to hold, and that’s before you even sip it…

We genuinely weren’t sure that Don Julio 1942 could be improved upon, until we tasted Ultima Reserva. The balance achieved by the 36-month ageing process and the combination of ex-Bourbon and Madeira-seasoned casks is exceptional. The nose displays notes of crisp agave, lemon, lime and grapefruit. On the palate, there’s toasted oak, caramel, apricot and orange, alongside a delicate sweetness reminiscent of honey and agave nectar. Ultima Reserva should be sipped on the rocks in fine company because this is a Tequila like no other.

Don Julio’s founder Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada began distilling at the tender age of 17. Honing his craft for almost 40 years at his La Primavera distillery in the highlands of Jalisco, he broke the mould of this drink being considered a fire water for farmers and now most historians and aficionados recognise his as the first ever luxury Tequila.
