Parts & Labor Red 16

Parts & Labor is a quirky blend of Carignan and Syrah from Mendocino, Grenache from the Central Coast, and an unexpected splash of Piedmont-inspired Barbera. This under-the-radar Californian is easy-going and dances lightly across the palate considering the weight of some of those grapes. It was fermented using natural yeast, resulting in a frisky and lively red. Pour a glass and discover black fruit, tangy cranberry, red cherry, liquorice, pepper, dried flowers and earthy spices. Normally when someone says, “parts and labour”, you know it’s going to set you back a pretty penny. But this wine bucks that trend at a great value £20 a bottle.

Folk Machine is one of the many labels from the fun-loving Hobo Wine Company. Based in Sonoma, this winery doesn’t own any vineyards, they just make cracking bistro-style wines using other people’s grapes.

They’re also a principled bunch - they discontinued capsules in 2005, as that was unnecessary packaging; the vineyards they work with are sustainably, organically or biodynamically farmed; the winery is powered by local renewable energy; they use 100% antique green glass to ensure the highest percentage of recycled material in their bottles; they donate 1% of their gross revenue to non-profit environmental organisations; they give financially to the Black Lives Matter campaign; and much more besides.
