Whispered about in the reverent tones usually reserved for producers like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, the wines of Domaine Dugat-Py are profound, but scarcely seen. Small production and an insatiable global demand make allocations to the UK tiny and the wines exceedingly difficult to track down. Loved by Allen Meadows of Burghound and the critics at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Domaine Dugat-Py is one of only a handful of domaines to be awarded three stars in the Revue de Vin de France’s ‘classement’. No serious cellar should be without these wines.
The unfiltered Bourgogne Blanc is the perfect window into this illustrious estate. However, Domaine Dugat-Py only make around 500-700 bottles each vintage, so getting hold of them isn’t easy. Aged in oak for 16-18 months, it’s mineral and earthy with buttery oak and juicy orchard fruit. Grab it while you can.
Based in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Dugat-Py’s cellars were built in the 11th Century to store wine for the Abbey of Saint Benigné in Dijon, so they’re very much a historical part of the Burgundy landscape. However, the first commercial vintage only came in 1989. Today Bernard and Jocelyne Dugat and their son, Loïc, are among the finest producers in the whole of Burgundy. The wines come from organic farmed and low-yielding old vines. Stylistically, they’re big on oak and extraction, so they’re built to last, very much ‘vins de garde’. But somehow, they’re still immensely elegant.
