We always think of Guigal’s Viognier-dominated Côtes du Rhône Blanc as a mini Condrieu. Rich yet fresh strong yet elegant it’s an enigma of a wine in which seemingly juxtaposed elements come together in perfect harmony and balance. We love to pair its distinctive white flower apricot acacia honey and white peach flavours with seafood creamy curries that are not too spicy and rich starters – something like a potato soup made with double cream sprinkled with kalamata olives and drizzled with truffle oil. Heaven!
E. Guigal is a simply legendary winery which has passed from founder Etienne to his son Marcel and now on to his grandson Philippe. According to Robert Parker it’s “a qualitative locomotive that has brought attention to the Rhône Valley raising the quality bar for the entire region.” And Parker has backed this up by awarding it more perfect 100-point scores than any other producer on the planet. Although famed for their Northern Rhône reds the whites are not to be missed either.
