If you’re looking for a unique spirit experience look no further than Ferdinand’s Saar Quince. Made using quinces grown just next to the 200-year-old Avadis Distillery and 30 finely balanced botanicals it’s then infused with Kabinett Riesling from the 275-year-old Zilliken winery’s Saarburger Rausch vineyard. The result it a German homage to sloe gin; golden in colour and rich with caramelised quince. No sugar is added the natural sweetness comes from the wine and the ripe quinces. It can be sipped neat alongside a cheeseboard used in any number of summery cocktails or mixed with tonic as you might a gin or sparkling wine as your might cassis.
Ferdinand’s Saar Quince is not only a true original it’s also a perfect gift for wine geeks. It takes its name from Ferdinand Geltz a forester who helped found the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer VDP – an organisation consisting of many of Germany’s top wine producers to maintain the quality of their region’s products. Ferdinand’s exquisite spirits are handcrafted by the talented Andreas Vallendar of Avadis Distillery using wines made by Dorothee Zilliken of Weingut Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken a Riesling producer that has “acquired a great reputation in Germany over the past five or more years” according to Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Ferdinand’s grow their own quince and lemon thyme two of their key botanicals and use local sloe rosehip angelica hop blossom and rose as well as lavender grown on fallow vineyards and more exotic herbs and spices from around the world.
