“Pale copper colour. Glorious old-fashioned mature white Rioja nose – all beeswax and lanolin. This is a gem with a rich undertow but no shortage of citrus freshness. A wine that is not made anywhere else… Pure delight.” – Jancis Robinson MW
Mature white Rioja like this is a thing of beauty but so infrequently seen in the UK.
Finca Allende Blanco is 95% Viura and 5% Malvasia from the estate’s best old vines. Fermented in French oak barrels and matured in them for seven months with the lees and a further seven without before being bottled without filtration or clarification making it vegan friendly. Wonderfully mouth-coating it’s teeming with tangy grapefruit and complex notes of peach greengage nectarine jasmine spiced nuts beeswax candles wool jumpers dried herbs toasted nuts and petrol. This is a rare and fascinating treat especially if served alongside Spanish tortilla or ajo blanco.
Located in the hillside village of Briones in the Rioja Alta Finca Allende was founded by the sister and brother team of Mercedes and Miguel Ángel de Gregorio. Allende roughly translates as ‘further’ which is rather fitting because this is an estate that goes above and beyond in their pursuit of creating exceptional Rioja. In fact they have been described by Jancis Robinson MW as a “decidedly superior Rioja producer.” This region of Spain is often compared to Bordeaux both stylistically and from a business model perspective but Finca Allende’s terroir-obsessed approach feels much more boutique almost Burgundian. A deep respect for the environment forms the central pillar of their viticultural approach. For example they eschew the use of harmful herbicides and synthetic chemicals actively work towards reducing their carbon emissions cultivate without the use of heavy machinery and support disadvantaged groups in society.
