When you want a full-flavoured full-throttle full-bodied full-on full-speed-ahead white wine then reach for First Drop’s Full Fat White.
It’s an innovative and highly unusual Aussie blend comprising Arneis (a grape whose name means ‘rascal’ in Italy where it’s most famous) Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. The grapes are grown by their mates Caj Nigel and Simon all in Adelaide Hills. These are crushed allowed a little skin contact slowly fermented with natural yeasts and matured on the lees (the spent yeast) in stainless steel for nine months. Full Fat White is proof that you don’t need oak to make a big punchy and glorious white wine. Zingy lemon grapefruit and lime mingle with luscious lemon curd crunchy apple peach melon pineapple and a sherbet texture. It’s like First Drop have melded their Endless Summer Pinot Grigio Vivo Arneis and Mere et Fils Chardonnay together into one super-charged wine. We don’t think there’s a better Aussie white on the market at this price point. Serve it alongside something full fat and comforting.
Set up by Essex boy Matt Gant and South Australian John Retsas First Drop is part winery and part frivolous merrymaking in a ginormous warehouse abandoned by Penfolds. This duo crafts grapes grown by their friends into fun-loving and easy-going wines with remarkable distinction and texture earning them a five-star rating from James Halliday. They also do this without using animal products in the fining process making the entire range vegan friendly.
