Fonterutoli Chianti Classico 2017 was awarded 92 points by wine critic and Italian expert James Suckling who praised the “soft and savoury” feel the “freshness” and “the fruit at the end”.

Fonterutoli is owned by Mazzei who were established in 1435 and their Chianti Classico is the estate’s bestseller. Made using Sangiovese Malvasia Nera Colorino and Merlot grapes from seven of the best vineyard sites selected from some 120 it’s dense muscular and packed with forest floor ripe cherry fruit orange peel and worn leather. Aged for 12 months in French oak it has real longevity and will just run and run. As with all Chiantis it’s extremely food friendly so can be paired with almost anything but goes particularly well with tomato-based pasta dishes.

Fonterutoli is a small hamlet with stunning views of Siena. Like a village that time forgot it feels like you’ve stepped back into the Middle Ages. When it comes to Chianti legend tells of a dispute over who owned the region Florence or Siena? To decide the boundary both cities sent a knight out on horseback at cock’s first crow. Siena chose a well-fed plump prize-winning white cockerel. Florence opted for a malnourished scrawny black cockerel. The latter woke early and hungry and the Florentine rider was almost all the way to Siena by the time his rival was roused by the white cockerel. The meeting point of the two riders is thought to have been at Fonterutoli.
