Any Riesling created by a winemaker described by Jancis Robinson as “one of the most skilled practitioners of Riesling anywhere in the world” is worthy of note. And when it’s an experimental Riesling from organic vines planted in the 1980s just in front of the cellar door of that producer you know it’s going to be something extra special.

It’s no secret that we are fans of Framingham – they make our wonderful Harvey Nichols Marlborough Pinot Noir – but we’ve fallen head over heels for F-Series their experimental range. Left to ripen on the vine for much longer than most this long “hang time” Riesling is partly fermented in oak resulting in an “intense dry wine with a panoply of ripe fruit flavours” that’s “almost rudely aromatic” according to Jancis Robinson. We’re far from offended by its honeysuckle lime mandarin ripe apple exotic fruit creamy praline lemon cheesecake and suggestion of musky botrytis we’d go as far as to say we love it. The only problem is that only 3 999 bottles were made and so there aren’t many to go around.

The Framingham label was launched in 1994 which makes them sound like relative newcomers. But they actually have some of the oldest vines in Marlborough New Zealand planted in 1981. Named after their ancestral home just outside Norwich in England Framingham make the wine they want to drink. And that passion is obvious in every aromatic food-friendly small-batch drop they create.
