“This is a very good Gevrey villages with promising development potential.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
Gevrey-Chambertin is the finest village in the Côte de Nuits. And one of our favourite ways to experience it is this wine from the dynamic Frédéric Magnien. It comes from old vines (averaging more than 55 years of age) in four lieux-dits, each in prime locations. For the Burgundy geeks out there, the grapes are picked in Clos Prieur-Bas, Les Epointures, Champ-Chenys and Les Seuvrées. These limestone-dominated plots create a Pinot Noir with an earthy underbrush complexity, notes of iron, dark berries, liquorice and savoury spice. We love this velvety wine with fat-marbled meats, fruity sauces and powerful cheeses.
Winemaker Frédéric Magnien is a magician of the Côte d'Or. The fifth generation of his family to make wine in this region, he dedicated himself to his father’s business in Morey-Saint-Denis, before travelling the world to gain experience in California and Australia. On his return he obtained a degree in oenology from the University of Bourgogne and decided to set up a business in his own name. As a négociant, he selects old vine plots from trusted growers.
Always hunting for higher and higher quality has led him down a path of organic viticulture and biodynamic rhythms in winemaking, and the quality of his wines has never been higher. He has recently started using partly oak-aged wines and partly amphora-aged wines within his blends, this mixture prevents the oak overshadowing the terroir character, making them particularly interesting to Burgundy connoisseurs.
