95+ points “The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino normale is a riper and more expressive creation quite darkly fruited but ultimately much less introverted than the bigger Brunello Crus of Rennina and Sugarille. Packed full of dark wild cherries black plums sweet cherry tobacco cherry cola liquorice botanical spices and menthol nuances all wrapped around a substantial frame of sweet polished tannins. Ideally this wine needs another few years in bottle but it is always difficult to resist this wine’s inviting sense of opulence poise and harmony on release. Another fantastic release for the Gaja fine wine empire.” – Greg Sherwood MW

2015 was a fabulous vintage for Brunello di Montalcino. It was described by the experts at Vinous Media as “the vintage we’ve been waiting for” and by critic James Suckling as a “fairy-tale vintage” and “a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss”. Combine that with the expertise of Gaja and you’re in for a treat.

Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino is the estate’s signature wine. This pioneering red represented a radical move away from the single cru wines at the time of its inception in 2005. In the exceptional 2015 vintage this 100% Sangiovese has been drawn from the top sites of Sugarille (the wine from this vineyard is considered to be “easily among the finest in the entire appellation” according to wine critic and Italian wine expert Antonio Galloni) and Rennina and from a 10-hectare parcel in the northeast of the appellation.

We adore its sweet and ripe fruit perfectly seasoned with notes of juicy plum juniper liquorice sweet spices and earthy herbs. And we can’t wait to open this half bottle alongside peppered steak wild boar sausages roasted root vegetables or slow-cooked Portobello mushrooms on a bed of polenta and peppery greens.

Although this family estate was established in the 1850s it wasn’t until Angelo Gaja took over in 1970 that Gaja was pushed though into the vanguard of Italian wine. Although the Super Tuscans hog much of spotlight this man is often described as having single-handedly dragged Italian wine into the modern age. Not content with introducing revolutionary modern techniques and non-indigenous grape varieties to his Piedmont vineyards propelling them into the position of benchmark for the region he has also branched out to Tuscany with dramatic effect. A rebel a perfectionist and an incredible winemaker when it comes to the great man we think Robert Parker puts it best: “A genius for sure Angelo Gaja cannot be faulted for what he puts in the bottle.”
