In celebration of Master Distiller Billy Walker’s half-century long career, GlenAllachie released a 50th Anniversary Series comprising three whiskies: Past, Present and Future.

Only 2,900 bottles of The GlenAllachie 16 Year Old Billy Walker 50th Anniversary Present Edition were released worldwide. Master Distiller Billy Walker (formerly of BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh) has matured this exquisite dram in an incredibly innovative set of casks. Following an initial maturation in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry casks, it was then aged in mizunara casks. For those not familiar with this legendary wood, we’ll have a little history lesson. After World War II, Japan found it very hard to secure barrels to mature its spirits in, but demand was growing. So, they turned to Japanese oak, also known as ‘mizunara’. It’s painfully difficult to cooper and prone to leaking, making it expensive and rare, but its tight grain imparts exotic aromas of sandalwood, incense and souk spices. Anything aged in it is intriguing, unique and in high demand.

The GlenAllachie 16 Year Old Billy Walker 50th Anniversary Present Edition pours an intense chestnut colour with flashes of mahogany. The nose explodes with heather honey, toasted almonds, dark chocolate praline, sandalwood, ginger, tangy marmalade, pecan pie, exotic spices and coconut macaroons. On the palate, you’ll discover more of that honey, ginger and praline, accompanied by demerara, Christmas cake, fig, golden syrup and lashings of cinnamon. Non-chill filtered, all-natural colour and Speyside satisfaction guaranteed. It may not have a box, but you don’t want to miss out on this rare bottle, especially considering the price it’s currently selling for at auction.

GlenAllachie – pronounced ‘Glen-al-ACK-ee’ – is one of those intriguing Single Malts that you’ve probably loved for some time, but just without realising it yet. This Speyside distillery, nestled at the foot of Ben Rinnes near Aberlour, was designed by William Delmé-Evans – the architect who also planned Tullibardine and Isle of Jura. The vast majority of GlenAllachie’s whisky has gone into the much-loved Chivas Brothers blends, hence why you’re probably already a fan. Now independently owned by The GlenAllachie Distillers Company Limited, a new range of whiskies has begun to emerge, which has scooped them Scottish Whisky Distillery of the Year 2019, World’s Best Single Malt at the 2021 World Whiskies Awards, and more than 50 other awards in just three years. You’re going to want to make space in your collection for GlenAllachie.
