“The Rather Enriched” name is spot on for this 19 Year Old. The Glencadam style has a wonderful combination of citrus and cereal and after almost two decades in Bourbon casks it’s becoming nutty – think coconut marzipan and hazelnuts – with notes of dried apricot and a crisp greenness almost like a hoppy IPA. Then they’ve finished it in Oloroso sherry casks enriching it with a layer of soft brown sugar Christmas spices juicy raisins dark chocolate and smoky coffee. But what’s so refreshing about this dram is that even with all that age and Sherry influence the distillery character shines through like a lighthouse on a dark and stormy night.
Glencadam opened its doors in 1825 and like most distilleries its history has been a rollercoaster ride. However still going strong almost two centuries later it’s now the only remaining distillery in Angus – the county located between the Cairngorms and Dundee on Scotland’s east coast. Their unpeated amber nectar reaches its largest audience as one of the components of the much-loved Ballantine’s Blended Scotch but their Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a rare find and should not be missed.
