92 points “This iconic sherried single malt Scotch gets an extra-generous helping of fruit from maturation in Port pipes at the hands of GlenDronach master blender Rachel Barrie. The result is a decadent and chewy dram that starts off with fig dried cherries and glazed banana chips on the nose. The mouth-filling flavours boast rich fruit with chocolate-covered cherry and spiced Christmas cake before a lingering finish of drying cocoa and gingersnaps. Lush creamy and moreish in the extreme.” – Whisky Advocate

That rave review in Whisky Advocate was accompanied by GlenDronach Port Wood being featured in the Top 20 Whiskies of 2021 making this festive wee dram a bit of a must-try.

Inspired by the historical import of casked Port into Scotland during the 19th Century GlenDronach gave this a second maturation of three years in Port pipes from the Douro Valley Portugal. Although bottled without an age statement this is ten-year-old expression brimming with Black Forest gateau Victoria plum blackberry and apple crumble strawberry jam Christmas gingerbread caramelised orange figgy pudding sandalwood and juicy sultana. Perfect for hunkering down with on a cold night especially over the holiday season.

GlenDronach’s history has been a tumultuous one. Burned to the ground a decade after it was founded bounced from hand to hand like a hot potato mothballed and resurrected it keeps coming back like the Terminator. However since being taken under the wing of The Benriach Distillery Company and more recently Brown-Forman things have settled down in the valley of Forgue Aberdeenshire. Whisky maker Rachel Barrie has produced a procession of exceptional richly sherried single malts with each release displaying even more character than the last. Rachel Barrie’s father is particularly partial to a GlenDronach and she was raised just down the road so this is one of the first distilleries she ever tasted and one that she is therefore incredibly passionate about.
