So, she knew what she was doing when she bought part of the farm granted to Simon van der Stel – the founder of Stellenbosch and widely regarded as the father of South African wine. There – at the age of 73 – she created Glenelly Estate, simply because she wanted a new adventure. She’s an inspiration to us all.
Respected wine critic and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin MW, says, “Let’s hear it for the 2017 vintage, which has produced a string of very enjoyable reds, even at cheaper prices.” Grown high on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, The Glass Collection Syrah is just such a wine. With alluring notes of spiced plum crumble, hedgerow blackberries, pepper and dried flowers, it feels like a Rhône red at a fraction of the price and with more concentration and sunshine. A fine choice for peppery stews, Sunday roasts or vegetables stir-fried in Chinese black pepper sauce. It was also awarded 91 points by Tim Atkin. And it’s vegan friendly to boot.
