Torfa whose name comes from the Old Norse word for turf or peat is a break from Glenglassaugh’s traditional style. This Scotch is created with richly peated malted barley. However do not expect the medicinal and maritime peat-reek associated with Islay. The smoke is clean and comforting as if it had been plucked straight from a campfire. Matured in ex-Bourbon barrels it offers notes of citrus sea spray roasted barley apple pineapple apricot jam bacon melon spices fried in butter barbeques honey and oat cookies and a lingering smoke not unlike the kind you might find on your clothes after sitting next to a roaring fire in a country pub for a while. And at a warming 50% ABV we’ll be sipping this all winter long.
Glenglassaugh pronounced ‘Glen-glas-sah’ is one of those glorious under-the-radar whiskies. Although the buildings aren’t much to look at the distillery’s location is maybe one of the most picturesque in all of Scotland. Nestled among rolling arable hills if you walk out of the back of the distillery you find yourself at the east end of the gorse-lined Sandend Bay which feels like a private beach for whisky lovers. You’ll find the distillery just down the road from the equally beautiful Portsoy right on the border of the Deveron area of Speyside which means there’s still some debate as to whether this is a Speyside or a Highland. However we’d do away with those classifications in this case as this is a coastal Single Malt.
The distillery was opened in 1875 but its tumultuous history has seen it closed as much it was open. The stills fell silent in 1986 when it was mothballed. Luckily it was rescued and revived by The BenRiach Distillery Company and then more recently Brown-Forman who also look after Harvey Nichols’ favourites BenRiach and GlenDronach. The whiskies are made under the watchful eye of their talented Master Blender Rachel Barrie who cut her teeth at the Scotch Whisky Research Institute and two industry heavyweights: Glenmorangie and Bowmore. It’s a relatively low-key operation with only around seven people on site at peak production and there are no computers Glenglassaugh prefer to things the old-fashioned way by hand taste and experience. Although you may have found yourself unknowingly drinking Glenglassaugh over the years because it has contributed to Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark among others now is the time to revisit this incredible seaside dram.
