Glenmorangie’s Lasanta was the winner of the ‘Best Highlands Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards 2017 and an International Whisky Competition gold medallist for ‘Best Single Malt 12 Years Old’ in the same year. Matured for around a decade in Bourbon barrels before being finished in hand-selected Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks from Jerez in Spain; the first wood smoothing out any edges and the second imparting rich fruit and spice. A stone cold classic.
At first sip it’s a very Scottish combination of Tunnock’s Caramel Dundee marmalade heather honey and the Hogmanay classic stuffed with raisins and currants black bun. But after that it whisks you around the world with Piedmontese praline Polish chocolate-covered prunes the spices of German Christmas markets Medjool dates and Alsace damson jam. Best enjoyed fireside.
Glenmorangie is a distillery that needs little or no introduction seeing as how it’s now a household – if sometimes mispronounced – name. Established in 1843 – although alcohol production may have started as early as 1703 – the folk of Tain have passed their skills down from generation to generation. But amidst all that tradition they’ve never stopped innovating and only Prohibition and World War II have briefly stopped their remarkably tall whisky stills from running.
