94-95 points “One of the great possibly overlooked ’77 vintage ports. This has a deep garnet hue with an intense dark chocolate sloe and raisin nose… A dense tannic youthful palate that belies its age this is ageing at a glacial pace with touches of liquorice and kirsch towards the finish. Magnificent but somewhat aloof.” – Wine Advocate

19 points “Fragrant but mysterious. Very well constituted. Glorious stuff with tannins only just discernible underneath initially. Just emerging to drinkability but tasting revealed absolutely masses of tannin underneath. My first impression was that I would like to have this in my cellar.” – Jancis Robinson

Respected wine critic James Suckling said of the Gould Campbell 1977: “This monumental wine proves how underrated this house is.” We couldn’t agree more.

Founded in 1797 by Irishman Garret Gould and acquired by the Symington family in 1970 Gould Campbell is an unusual Port house in that they have no noted vineyards of their own choosing to source grapes from local farmers in the area around Pinhão and the Rio Torto. Charles Symington argues that Gould Campbell is a small-production niche brand and as such it enables him to make “fun and satisfying wines” that provide excellent value for money.

Gould Campbell’s Vintage Ports tend to be full bodied and rich in style. The 1977 is perfumed and seductive with generous ripe fruits a full-body medium sweetness and a long tannic finish. The notes of raspberry coffee raisin liquorice prune and silky dark chocolate are love at first sip. A big and voluptuous wine that is maturing at a “glacial pace” which is exactly what you want when opening it more than 40 years after the harvest. Perfect to pair with indulgent desserts blue cheese or dark chocolate.
