Valcanzjria (try saying that after a glass or two) is an organic blend of Chardonnay and Carricante an indigenous variety thought to have been grown on Etna for more than a thousand years. Carricante’s acidity is the perfect partner to the richer and more full-bodied Chardonnay creating a moreish and dry white wine that bristles with exotic fruit apple wildflower honey star anise and almond. This has become our go-to for lightly creamy pasta dishes seafood risotto and paella even though it’s not very Italian.
Gulfi is one of Sicily’s most cherished award winning and iconic wineries. Their vineyards stretch from Sicily’s extreme south-eastern tip all the way up the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. Raffaele Catania began making wines in 1970s and Gulfi has passed through two more generations of the family since. Committed to sustainability and minimal intervention their certified-organic vines are trained like little trees this helps them to cope with the extreme conditions shading themselves and preventing them from needing irrigating. Their consulting winemaker Savlo Foti has probably forgotten more about Sicilian wine than most other know. Together they create wines that tell the true story of Sicily – one of the world’s most exciting wine regions.
