91 points, “Often understated in its first couple of years, Sandstone marries Sauvignon Blanc with 49% Chardonnay and Semillon. Lime, white pepper and pear flavours segue into a racy, grapefruity finish, with some skin tannins adding extra grip.” – Tim Atkin MW
This small-batch white wine takes some of South Africa’s finest Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillon and adds further complexity through fermentation and ageing in ceramic eggs, neutral barrels and amphorae. This labour of love tastes like a blend of Chablis and white Bordeaux crafted on the South African coast.
Ashbourne Sandstone is a stunning and vegan-friendly white. We love to serve it to wine geeks, because it’s at once completely unique and yet at the same time reminiscent of many of the world’s finest white wines. It’s guaranteed to stump almost anyone in a blind tasting. The aromatics are like pear, peach, citrus, orchard blossom and fresh herbs blown in on a sea breeze, while the palate shows incredible purity, zingy acidity and an elegant finish of citrus pith and sea salt.
The beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley winery is owned by the legendary Anthony Hamilton Russell. As the valley’s name suggests, it is paradise; a veritable heaven on Earth of towering mountains, rolling vineyards and the azure seas. It took Ashbourne two decades to perfect this blend, but it was worth the wait as they’ve created a classic.
