Now here’s an experimental wine with an intriguing story…

Tenacity is a range of limited-edition wines from Hartenberg Family Vineyards in Stellenbosch South Africa. Each year their Cellar Master Carl Shultz creates a few candidates for the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction an exclusive members-only auction of rare and unique wines. However wines for the CWG Auction undergo rigorous screening by an independent laboratory and a blind tasting panel so only a handful get through. The ones that aren’t selected are bottled under the Tenacity label in tiny quantities. Most of them go into restaurants but we’ve managed to catch a few cases. These persistent resolute and determined wines showcase the pinnacle of what Hartenberg Family Vineyards can do.

Tenacity Riesling is made from grapes picked at dawn then fermented dry in small old French oak barrels. It’s left to mature there in the barrels on the lees (the spent yeast that imparts creaminess and texture) for 12 months. It erupts from the glass with floral notes and chalky minerality. On the palate it reveals a zesty lemon sorbet character a divinely creamy texture and a finish that seems to last an aeon. A stunning wine to serve alongside creamy seafood dishes coconut curries or anything roasted with lemon and herbs. Only 111 cases were made and with a little tenacity we managed to secure ten of them. So don’t miss out.

Hartenberg Family Vineyards can be found nestled on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. The site was recognised as a fine one for vines back in 1692. In Tim Atkin MW’s Special Report South Africa 2021 he awarded them ‘First Growth status’ for the fourth consecutive year singling them out as one of the country’s greatest wineries.
