2016 was a fabulous vintage in Bordeaux. Don’t just take our word for it the experts at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate have rated it as “extraordinary” in most appellations and this is what the other critics have to say:

“A vintage for today’s Bordeaux wine lovers.” – James Suckling

“The 2016 vintage of Bordeaux is widely considered to be excellent even legendary.” – Wine Searcher

“The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded.” – Jancis Robinson MW

“The bottled 2016s capture every bit of the potential I sensed when I started tasting the wines from barrel prior to en primeur in January 2017. I found many 2016s to be even better from bottle than they were during the spring futures campaign. The best 2016s are powerful richly layered vibrant and stunningly beautiful not to mention incredibly delicious and alluring. For so many wines and estates 2016 is an epic vintage.” – Antonio Galloni

“It’s a year of stunning quality and there are numerous properties that have made the best wine in the history of their estate!” – Jeff Leve The Wine Cellar Insider

“The secret ingredient in the success of these wines is their crisp acidity and that balance is what makes a great Bordeaux vintage.” – Roger Voss Wine Enthusiast

“These wines represent the new renaissance of Bordeaux where harmony refinement and energy are the new keywords for the region.” – James Suckling

In celebration of the outstanding quality on display from this monumental vintage we’ve picked out a trio of crackers to explore. First up we have La Réserve de Léoville Barton the second wine of the much-loved and always reliable Second Growth from Saint-Julien. As wine critic Neal Martin says: “year-in year-out [Château Léoville Barton] produces delicious well-crafted high-quality Saint-Julien that its legions of devoted fans – including myself – finish down to the very last drop.” And this is no exception; brimming with intense blackberry strawberry blackcurrants and sandalwood. Next there’s the second wine from Château Haut-Bages Libéral. This stylish estate is run by Claire Villlars-Lurton – who also looks after Château Ferrière and Château La Gurgue and is married to Gonzague Lurton from Château Durfot-Vivens in Margaux – and it’s located about a fifteen-minute walk away from some of the world of wine’s biggest names. Half the vineyards sit next to Château Latour and the remaining half can be found nestled behind Château Pichon Baron. So this is a Pauillac with some mighty fine terroir and a powerful winemaking family behind it. On top of all that Eric Boissenot consults for them and he is a man who has touched the wines of Latour Lafite Rothschild Margaux Mouton Rothschild Palmer Pichon Longueville Pichon Baron Ducru-Beaucaillou Léoville Barton Brane Cantenac Léoville Las Cazes Gruaud-Larose and many more. The last wine in this delicious bunch is another neighbour to Latour. Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the second wine from the superstar Château Pichon Baron. First launched in 2012 it has improved with every vintage which should come as no surprise as this Super Second regularly competes with the First Growths. According to Antonio Galloni “the wine is superb this year. Concentrated layers of luscious fruits the structure is forthright and graceful with round creamy tannins and a long blackcurrant spice and liquorice-filled finish. Hard to believe this wine this is not a classified growth in this vintage!”

2016 Bordeaux is one to fill the cellar with. Don’t miss out on this fantastic vintage.
