“Sicily is as fascinating to students of the modern wine world as it is to those of ancient civilisations.” – Jancis Robinson

Stretching out from the mainland towards Tunisia Sicily boasts near-perfect conditions for winemaking. So much so that it sometimes produces as much as Australia Chile and Bulgaria combined. To help you uncover the island’s superstars we’ve created our Gems of Sicily case…

Our journey begins with a wine created using two of Sicily’s top white varieties Grillo and Catarratto. Not only does this Sicilia DOC Superiore crunch with crisp apple Mediterranean herbs orange blossom mandarin lemon sorbet a little nutty bitterness and a fresh mountain breeze but it also fights crime and corruption because Centopassi make their organic wines on land seized from the mafia. We continue with a biodynamic old-vine Nerello Mascalese – a grape that produces haunting reds with a finesse and vineyard variation that can rival the finest Pinot Noir from Burgundy – made by a poetry lover between the Nebrodi National Park and the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. And we finish with another fabulous Etna Rosso this time from Benanti – who’s “wines are among the best made on the volcano today” according to the experts at Wine Advocate. An explosive eruption of rose petal violets blueberries cherry raspberry wild strawberry orange zest leather peppery biltong vanilla earth and sea salt; it will have you whipping up wild mushroom pappardelle in no time. It’s a truly fascinating selection.
