Huntress 2023 is the eagerly anticipated second release from the Huntress spring series of whiskies - Nc’nean’s new seasonal series of certified-organic whiskies. These experimental limited editions explore new flavour profiles and celebrate the creativity of the small, eco-conscious team that is making this rebellious little distillery one of the most exciting on the planet.

The name – pronounced ‘nc-nee-an’ – is an abbreviation of Neachneohain, a protector of nature known as the Queen of Spirits in Gaelic legend. A fitting moniker for such a wild, regal and environmentally friendly whisky. Neachneohain was a goddess of wild animals, hills, rivers and the moon, as well as being a huntress.

Huntress 2023 - Woodland Candy was matured in a mix of 35% ex-American whiskey casks and 65% STR (shaved, toasted and re-charred) red wine barrels without colouring or chill filtration. It was made using 100% organic Scottish barley and their signature Anchor & Fermentis yeast recipe, making this their first whisky with a special four yeast recipe. So, from the flavour profile you can expect creamy toffee, dark fruits from the woodlands of the wild west coast, and spicy botanicals.

Located on the remote Morvern peninsula on Scotland’s west coast, just across the Sound of Mull from Tobermory, Nc’nean has already been named in the top 10 Scottish distilleries to visit by The Guardian, not just for the exceptional whisky, but also because “walks in any direction offer the chance to spot otters, pine martens and sea eagles.” And, they are doing everything they can to protect the nature that surrounds them. Nc’nean is the first certified net zero whisky distillery in the UK. They plant trees, use organic ingredients, are powered by renewable energy and recycle 99.97% of their waste, the whisky is even bottled in 100% recycled glass.

Nc’nean is the brainchild of Annabel Thomas. Following years of research, fundraising and building, she launched the distillery to change perceptions of Scottish whisky. Out with the fusty history, scratchy tartan and old boys’ club vibes, and in with a new and independent breed of light and delicious Scotch, powered by renewable energy and a passion for sustainability. While on her journey, she visited many distilleries, where she noted: “Everyone kept talking about heritage and tradition, but I was thinking, ‘where are the guys who are thinking about the future?’”

In our opinion, what she has created is the future. Her team got a little help in the early days from the late, great Dr Jim Swan, a celebrated whisky maker who was described as “the Einstein of whisky” and who was instrumental in setting up a raft of great distilleries, including Cotswolds, Kavalan, Penderyn, Kilchoman, Victoria Caledonian and Milk & Honey. His backing is as ringing an endorsement as you’ll find in the world of whisky.
