Margaux is the largest commune in the Médoc one of the closest to Bordeaux city and possibly the first to be planted with vineyards in the area. While Pauillac may hog the limelight and First Growths Margaux creates some of the most elegant alluring and famous reds on the Left Bank as well as being home to the legendary Château Margaux.

For our Margaux Collection we’ve included wines from three different vintages and some of the region’s most prestigious properties.

First up is the 2016 Grand Vin from Château La Gurgue which is run by Claire Villlars-Lurton the talent who has revived the fortunes of Château Ferrière (a rare Margaux with the smallest area of vines of any of the classified growths) and Château Haut-Bages Libéral (neighbour to Chateau Latour) and the wife of Gonzague Lurton from Château Durfot-Vivens also in Margaux. She really knows how to pick her vineyards as half of Château La Gurgue’s plots are surrounded by the vineyards of the First Growth Château Margaux with the rest of the plots two minutes up the road in Soussans. Eric Boissenot consults for her and he also helps with Latour Lafite Rothschild Margaux Mouton Rothschild Palmer Pichon Longueville Pichon Baron Ducru-Beaucaillou Léoville Barton Brane Cantenac Léoville Las Cazes Gruaud-Larose and many more. 2016 was a benchmark vintage for Margaux so this is not to be missed.

Next there’s the second wine of Château Brane-Cantenac one of Margaux’s greats. Winemaker Henri Lurton – whose family is winemaking royalty in Bordeaux – creates this wine to give an early glimpse into the beauty of the Grand Vin and it comes from the younger plots on the estate but the exact same care and attention are applied to it. The château has its own weather station they study satellite images of the vineyards one-third of the vines are farmed organically and the others are moving that way; this is a real labour of love and attention to detail. 2015 was another opulent and impressive vintage in Margaux making this flamboyant and silky red an exquisite choice.

And finally there’s a wine from the historic and prestigious Bordeaux estate of Château Siran which is producing some of the most consistently charming and best value wines from Margaux. Saint-Jacques de Siran is sourced from plots belonging to the estate located on the border of the appellation. This Bordeaux Supérieur 2017 (another solid vintage) is a go-to everyday drinker and a classic Claret in the truest sense. It’s as smooth round and pleasing as a marble.

So raise a glass with us and say ‘cheers’ to Margaux.
