Designed to inspire wanderlust and exploration this selection delves into the rarer grape varieties unusual locations and buried treasures of Spain.

We kick off with the flagship wine from the leading producer in Spain’s O Rosal Valley. This wine from Terras Gauda is an artful blend of Albariño Caíño Blanco and Loureira picked in the most southerly part of Rías Baixas just across the River Miño from neighbouring Portugal. Imagine classic Spanish Albariño meets Portuguese Vinho Verde and consider pairing it with something spicy. Next we have an aromatic herby and creamy Verdejo that honours the chemist who identified the grape that would shape Rueda’s future. It was made by his granddaughter using grapes from old vines in El Camino del Puerto – known as the “golden mile” for Verdejo. Our last white wine is a biodynamic Xarel·lo – a grape most famous for its use in Cava. This is a rare opportunity to taste its peach mango pear melon herb blossom and fennel flavours without the bubbles.

In the red corner we start with a wine that was inspired by the tallest mountain in the Pyrenees Aneto. The 3404 Tinto from Bodegas Pirineos comes from the relatively young Somontano Denominación de Origen (DO). It delivers strawberry from the Grenache raspberry from the Cabernet Sauvignon and pepper from the Moristel the latter is a speciality of the region that was saved from extinction by the creation of the DO in 1984. Our next red gets a little darker. Vinos Valtuille create wines that represent the essence of the Mencía grape in Bierzo. El Valao comes from 90-year-old vines and its dark and crunchy with lots of wild hedgerow berries toasted nuts smoke liquorice balsamic and menthol. And finally we have a decidedly French-sounding wine from Valencia. El Bon Homme is an organic blend of Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon made by Rafael Cambra. Rich jammy and spicy it tastes like Bordeaux meets Spain’s sunny east coast and should keep you warm on cold nights.

For those looking to try something a little different from Spain this is the mixed case for you.
