Pinot Noir is arguably the world’s most famous and charismatic grape variety but one of the toughest to grow. It has given us the most expensive wine on the planet (thanks Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) the Champagne region relies heavily upon it and there’s even a film dedicated to it Sideways. The 18th August is Pinot Noir Day but we like to celebrate it throughout the year. Which is why we put together this Pinot Noir Lover’s Trio.

The selection includes three red wines from three of the grape’s most popular regions: Burgundy California and Martinborough in New Zealand. Let’s start with Burgundy because that’s the likely origin of this grape variety. Our first bottle is made by Domaine Paul & Marie Jacqueson and comes from old vines planted in 1985. The highly polished Rully Les Chaponnières Rouge shows why Marie Jacqueson has already been pegged as a future superstar by the Hospices de Beaune. Next we find a wine that captures the laid back vibes warm sunshine and ocean breezes of California – La Crema Winery’s Monterey Pinot Noir. Bursting with pomegranate cranberry plum raspberry wild strawberry rhubarb blood orange tarragon and wild mushroom notes this demonstrates why this grape has become so popular stateside. And finally we have a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from a New Zealand winery that’s fast developing a cult following among fine wine connoisseurs. Their wines could be mistaken for top-flight Burgundy and the one we’ve chosen was awarded a massive 96 points by the respected wine critic James Suckling. This trio is perfect for any Pinot Noir lover.
