Saint-Emilion is one of Bordeaux’s oldest and largest regions. The history of winemaking here dates back to Roman times (Château Ausone is named after the poet Decimus magnus Ausonius) but the wines took a while to become famous because the area didn’t have ready access to Bordeaux’s port which limited their reach. There’s no such problem for this Right Bank appellation now the predominantly Merlot-dominated wines produced here are some of the most loved reds on the planet. Many of the best châteaux are located on the limestone-rich hillsides that surround the picturesque village of St. Emilion now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But there’s wonderful diversity in this appellation with the gravel beds near Pomerol giving rise to legends like Cheval Blanc and that’s what makes it a great one to explore.

The first wine in our collection comes from Château Canon located on top of Saint-Emilion’s much-coveted limestone plateau. This fashionable Bordeaux estate joined Château Rauzan-Ségla Napa Valley’s St. Supéry Estate and Domaine de l’Ile on the island of Porquerolles under the ownership of Chanel. As you can imagine no expense is therefore spared on Croix Canon the renamed and rarely seen second wine of Château Canon. 2015 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux and this wine earned a score of 92 points from Antonio Galloni who said “The 2015 Croix-Canon is dark plush and enveloping. Super-ripe black cherry plum mocha liquorice and spice infuse this generous open-knit second wine from Canon. All the signatures of the year and estate come through in a very beautiful nuanced Saint-Émilion.”

Joining that we have a wine that “shows excellent potential” (James Suckling 93 points) from Château Teyssier. This property has a long history dating back to the 1700s but things got really interesting when it changed ownership in the early 90s. Jonathan Maltus OBE sold his engineering company and bought this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru property in 1994. He completely renovated it and grew it from around 5 hectares to over 50. This maverick Brit and lover of Cabernet Franc quickly earned the monikers “garagise” and “cult winemaker” particularly for the “super-cuvées” he produces on the estate (Le Dome Les Astéries Le Carré Vieux Château Mazerat and Clos Nardian. Packed with jammy Merlot and the freshness of Cabernet Franc Château Teyssier Saint-Émilion Grand Cru displays boisterous black cherry plum crumble and blackberry fruit streaked with notes of wooden pencils clove dried herbs sandalwood and mocha. Dense and luscious this beautifully offbeat Bordeaux is a big Harvey Nichols favourite particularly on cold nights.

And finally there’s Château Rol Valentin 2016. This producer may not be a household name but it’s one to keep an eye on. They’re an exciting new breed of garagiste in Saint-Emilion creating immensely concentrated and juicy reds with lots of new oak influence. With only five hectares of vines they make wines in tiny quantities so this is very hard to come by. And it certainly impressed the critics with both James Suckling and Tim Atkin MW highlighting its power richness and density.

So we hope you’ll join us in raising a glass to Saint-Emilion.
