Finding out whether wines are suitable for those on a plant-based diet can be a challenge as there’s no legal requirement for wineries to mark this on their labels. So we’ve done the leg work for you and created the Vegan Friendly Collection.
Many winemakers use products derived from animals to fine or clean their wines such as egg whites casein (a protein from milk) gelatine and chitin (a fibrous substance from the shells of crustacea). These wines aren’t made with any of those icky bits.
The selection includes two whites one rosé and three reds. The white wines are very different one is a delightfully crisp Italian Malvasia with notes of crunchy peach and salted almonds while the other is a big and floral South African blend of rich Viognier Hárslevelü (a rare grape variety famed for its use in Hungary’s Tokaji) zingy Sauvignon Blanc and textural Semillon. The rosé – an organic blend from Argentina’s Malbec country – is pure summer in a glass. And for the reds we have a coastal Chilean Pinot Noir praised for its value by both Decanter and Jancis Robinson; a juicy organic garage wine made by a Master of Wine and his two pals in Spain; and a chunky South African blend that’s a perennial favourite and a bestseller every Christmas. Being ethical never tasted so good.
The biggest thing most people can do to help battle the Climate Crisis is to embark on a more plant-based diet. Of course we’re not saying that this case of wine will save the world but we all have to start somewhere. Cheers to the future.
