To celebrate the Lunar New Year in 2022 Hennessey asked artist Zhang Enli to design a limited-edition bottle and case for their much-loved X.O. Cognac.
Born in China’s Jilin Province in 1965 Zhang Enli graduated from the Arts and Design Institute of Wuxi Technical University teaches at the Arts and Design Institute of Donghua University and his oeuvre is exhibited throughout the world. Following all the challenges loss and anxiety experienced by everyone over the past year the Shanghai-based artist has chosen to celebrate new beginnings and the hope change and renewed energy that the Year of the Tiger promises to bring. The vibrant and dreamlike piece he created for Hennessy is called ‘Poetry and Wine Welcome the Tiger” and it’s an ode to artistic rhythms optimism and vitality.
The tiger is a symbol of power success and confidence and is represented in the painting by the bold colours and dark stripes. Meanwhile the yellow and gold evoke the festive atmosphere of Lunar New Year. Zhang Enli’s work here also has a beautiful fluidity influenced by his visit to Hennessy and the deep impact the Charente River had on him. This also ties in neatly with this being the Year of the Water Tiger which only occurs once in every sixty years. In creating the piece featured on the stunning gift box Zhang Enli channelled ‘hu hu sheng wei’ meaning ‘moving forward with the vigour and vitality of the tiger’. This is a spirit that we would all do well to utilise over the coming year.
Created by Maurice Hennessy in 1870 for his circle of friends Hennessy X.O. was born at a turning point in history introducing a new style of Cognac that was bold rich and complex.
