92 points “Beautifully nuanced rosé from Henri Giraud.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

92 points “Full-bodied broad and textural will all the house’s signature vinosity… This is another success.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Apart from being the best gift ever for someone called Jane Dame-Jane Rosé Champagne is a relatively new cuvée from Henri Giraud. We adore this tiny Champagne house not just because it’s one of the oldest but also because it remains too innovative and creative. Predominantly Pinot Noir (the house speciality) with a little Chardonnay this wine is vinified in oak barrels from the Forest of Argonne first before being aged for a few months in a terracotta amphora or demijohn known in France as a dame-jeanne meaning Lady Jane. It is then further matured in the bottle. The result of this labour of love is simply sublime. Bursting with bright red fruit particularly cherry but also strawberry and shortbread pomegranate raspberry plum and even a little peach. There are also complex notes of roses peonies sage mint cream charred orange zest tobacco smoke and oaky spices. You could sit and happily pick it apart like the fine wine that it is for hours on end. Rosé this rich and rewarding is rare and not to be missed.

Once referred to by Robert Parker as “the greatest Champagne you’ve never heard of” Champagne Henri Giraud is a family-run business that has been based in the Grand Cru village of Äy since the 17th Century. In fact it’s one of the oldest Champagne houses to still be owned by its founding family. Having passed from generation to generation of the Giraud-Hémart family (descendants of Henri IV) the house now finds itself in the hands of Claude Giraud a true master of old-vine Pinot Noir. What makes this producer so exciting is the lack of stainless steel in their winemaking. They favour the use of terracotta sandstone concrete eggs and most importantly Argonne oak casks. (Trees from the historic Forest of Argonne have been used in the production of Champagne for ten centuries.) Although the popularity of vinification in oak is growing in Champagne it is still relatively rare but it places Henri Giraud in the illustrious company of the likes of Krug Jacques Selosse Billecart-Salmon and Bollinger. And it also gives Henri-Giraud’s wines a rich powerful woody and deeply hedonistic character. The sustainably farmed wines are made in boutique quantities – only 250 000 bottles a year – and in the very fashionable natural wine style using minimal sulphur. So now you’ve heard of Henri-Giraud you just need to decide whether to share or keep them a secret.
