Henriques & Henriques Medium Rich 1998 Single Harvest Madeira is the perfect wine for serving alongside Christmas cake mince pies stollen and figgy pudding. It also offers incredible value when you consider how much a 20-year-old whisky might set you back.

This particular release is a special single vintage bottling taken from the 1998 harvest and produced using Tinta Negra Mole a chameleon-like grape variety that’s undergoing a renaissance helped in no small part by wines like this. The nose is multi-layered and inviting with indulgent notes of caramel toffee walnut raisins and a hint of coffee beans. The palate is sweet but perfectly balanced with firm acidity and displays delicious flavours of citrus fruit caramel hazelnut vanilla antique wood and chocolate. Persistent and crisp on the finish this would make an excellent accompaniment to rich caramelised desserts chocolate Christmas fare pâté or a cheeseboard.

Founded in 1850 by João Gonçalves Henriques his two sons took over in 1912 and this world-famous Madeira house became Henriques & Henriques as we know it today. Madeira has enjoyed a strong bond with the United Kingdom since King Charles II married Princess Catherine of Portugal but Henriques & Henriques’ is particularly enviable. You’ll find them near the picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. They’ve also seen their wine served at a Buckingham Palace for a banquet attended by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh not to mention William and Kate Charles and Camilla Prince Harry and the Prime Minister. They’re the only Madeira house to own vineyards one of the few whose wines are vegan-friendly and in 2017 were named “Best Fortified Wine Producer of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos Magazine – a considerable feat considering they were up against not only Madeira’s famous wineries Blandy’s and Barbeito but also all the great producers of Port.

Madeira is one of the most fascinating and underestimated wines on the planet. A visit to this tiny Portuguese island – closer to Morocco than Europe – reveals a dizzying array of styles a quite frankly crazy history and feats of engineering that make the mind boggle.
