The exciting and eagerly anticipated ‘Arrival’ is the inaugural release from Edinburgh’s Holyrood Distillery. Inspired by the distillery’s location in the former Innocent Railway Terminal – the label replicates an old train ticket – it’s made using Scotch pot still malt and distilling yeast with each future release evolving from this recipe using heritage and speciality malts, alongside a range of yeasts not typically used within Scotch whisky production. This limited series, with only 8188 bottles, has been matured in Oloroso sherry butts, Pedro Ximenez hogsheads, Bourbon barrels and rum barriques and then bottled at 46.1%. The distinctive bottle is similar to that of a beer bottle with brown glass paying tribute to a once bustling glassworks located not far from the distillery.

This individual and complex single malt sings of butterscotch, tropical fruits, sticky toffee pudding, soft leather and freshly baked bread, while on the palate there’s sweet and spice with touches of ginger, toffee, vanilla, digestive biscuits and raisins. Savour the long lingering finish full of baked apple pie, sweet spice and dark red forest fruits which completes this impressively smooth young whisky. Try it while you can as Holyrood currently has no plans to create a flagship whisky or range and will instead focus on semi-regular releases.

Holyrood Distillery was founded in 2019 and is located in the heart of Edinburgh. It’s a forward-thinking craft style distillery, producing this new-make spirit alongside the Height of Arrows gin brand, Rum Union and Elizabeth Yard rum.
