At the time of writing this iconic Napa producer had received 19 perfect 100 point scores from Robert Parker driving demand off the charts. It isn’t open to the public and access to the wines is via a five-year waiting list. So this listing represents a fleeting opportunity.
Many of Hundred Acre’s wine labels include the opening paragraph of Homer’s Odyssey eluding to the fact that this is one man’s epic quest. That man is ex-investment banker Jayson Woodbridge. Not only is he the owner and the winemaker a combo that’s particularly rare in California but he is also self-taught through trial and error. According to Robert Parker: “The genius of Jayson Woodbridge is not in dispute… These are remarkable wines with his Cabernet Sauvignons some of the very finest in the world.” Woodbridge is a fiery and outspoken character whose wealth has allowed him to think on an entirely different plane to most winemakers. No expense has been spared; grapes are harvested by berry not by bunch the selection is ruthless the sites are second to none the standards are exacting and the oak is always new.
Kayli Morgan is named after Jayson Woodbridge’s daughter and his first business partner's daughter. The vineyard was originally planted with Sauvignon Blanc which Woodbridge dug up and replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon much to the consternation of his more conservative neighbours. It sits on a little clay-rich button not unlike Château Pétrus. The 2014 is a fragrant delight. For a wine of this creaminess and density the perfume of potpourri spiced fruitcake rose harissa tobacco crème de cassis blueberry muffin and fresh mint is practically ethereal. Simply epic stuff and worthy of its 99-point score from Wine Advocate.
