Aberfeldy was founded on the banks of the Tay, not far from the town of the same name, in 1896 by John Dewar’s & Sons. Constructed during the whisky boom, it’s the only distillery built by the Dewar family. As a result, fans of Dewar’s famous blends will already be familiar with the delights that come out of this Highland distillery. Its dramatic location – surrounded by Perthshire’s highest mountain, deepest loch and longest glen – is considered the ‘Heart of Scotland’. Water is sourced from Pitilie Burn, which is unusually high in mineral deposits and also gold apparently, which maybe explains why so many know it as the ‘Golden Dram’. Like gold, Aberfeldy is rare and precious. Very little has been released historically under its own label, but Dewar’s is now part of the Bacardi empire, which has brought considerable investment to this often-overlooked gem. So, now we’re starting to see an increasing and welcome presence of these core whiskies. The future is looking golden for Aberfeldy.
