Definitely a winery to watch, the vastly experienced Australian wine critic Gary Walsh says “in a very short space of time Adelina have become one of my favourite producers in the Clare Valley, and indeed, South Australia.”
Just down the road from the likes of Wendouree and Tim Adams, Adelina’s owners Jennie Gardner and Colin McBryde make wine very naturally. To put that statement in perspective, they admit that their most elaborate piece of equipment is their coffee machine. But the results demonstrate their huge passion. These Shiraz and Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre) grapes were harvested by hand from very old vines, many of which have long since become centenarians. Only 4,950 bottles were made and it’s so fresh that it positively buzzes with blackberry, blueberry, black plum, praline, barbeque, dried herbs, graphite, forest floor, and black pepper. It’s a lovely red to drink on its own but also pairs well with barbeques, grills, pizza and comfort food.
If you’ll allow us a small literary digression, in Tibor Fischer’s exceptional novel Under The Frog, a sadistic basketball coach declares that “they say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but as far as I’m concerned that’s exactly what it’s there for.” We all judge wine by its branding sometimes. There’s nothing wrong with that. Luckily Adelina Shiraz Mataro proves as bewitching and beautiful as its floral Rorschach label.
