The legendary Lincoln Henderson was one of the first inductees to the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Whisky Advocate and during a 40-year-long career developed huge brands like Woodford Reserve and Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack and Single Barrel. However he had always dreamt of making a Bourbon finished in Port wine barrels. So he jumped at the chance to come out of retirement and do just that with his son Wes. Soon Lincoln’s grandson and Wes’ son Kyle joined the family business and together the three generations created a whole new kind of whiskey on their own terms. Although they lost 5% of their spirit each year to the “Angel’s Share” (evaporation during barrel ageing) what remained was the Angel’s Envy. Sadly Lincoln Henderson died in 2013 surrounded by his family but his spirit lives on the incredible whiskey they continue to make.
Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon is handcrafted in small batches of around eight to twelve barrels at a time. Typically aged for around six years when it’s deemed ready it’s finished in Ruby Port casks (made from French oak and imported directly from Portugal) for between three and six months. The marriage of the sweet caramel maple syrup toasted nut and vanilla from the Bourbon with the sticky wine flavours of raisin raspberry chocolate and red berries from the Port cask is simply exquisite. Smooth sweet and wonderfully balanced; serve this and everyone will be envious.
